The current developer estimate for Phantom Blade Zero’s main story is approximately 20–30 hours. That figure comes from pre-release comments by S-GAME founder and director Soulframe Liang. It is not a measured average from the final retail version, and individual playtimes will depend on exploration, combat difficulty, optional quests, and how often a player revisits earlier areas.
Optional content can extend the experience beyond the main path. S-GAME has confirmed side quests, hidden routes, secrets, optional enemies, treasure, and story paths that can open through some side quests. Liang has also discussed eight possible endings. However, there is no reliable completionist estimate before the public can finish and measure the released game.
Phantom Blade Zero main story length
In a December 2025 interview, Liang estimated 20–30 hours to finish the main story. He also warned that focusing only on the critical path could lead to a bad outcome, connecting the playtime discussion to the game’s wider narrative structure.
The useful number here is a range, not a promise. Developer estimates are usually based on internal play patterns and may not reflect every player. Someone learning parry timing on a higher difficulty could take longer, while an experienced action-game player following the main route may move more quickly.
The estimate also predates public access to the complete release build. Until a representative group of players completes the game, there is no verified average for a first run. The safest answer remains: expect a main story in the 20–30 hour range, with the understanding that it is an informed pre-release estimate.
How much side content is there?
S-GAME has not published a final count of side quests, optional bosses, hidden areas, collectibles, or treasure. It has, however, shown that exploration is an important part of the game rather than a decorative space around the main missions.
Confirmed optional or exploratory elements include:
- Citizens who can lead Soul into side quests
- Hidden paths and secrets throughout the Wulin
- Optional enemies and combat encounters
- Treasure and other discoveries away from the direct route
- Story clues that add context to the central mystery
- Reasons to return to previously visited areas
- Weapons and other progression opportunities tied to exploration or enemies
The complete volume of each activity remains unknown. It would be misleading to turn that list into a precise number of extra hours before release.
Our maps and exploration guide explains the interconnected world structure and why its density may matter more than raw map size.
Will side quests affect playtime?
Yes. Any player who stops to investigate optional paths or help characters will naturally spend longer in the Wulin than someone following only required objectives.
Side quests may also affect what the player sees. The August 2026 State of Play says that interacting with citizens and completing some side quests may open additional story paths and deepen Soul’s understanding of the martial world. That makes optional content relevant to narrative discovery as well as playtime.
The wording does not mean every side quest creates a major branch, nor does it reveal which quests matter most. There is no verified quest list, route order, or point-of-no-return guide yet. The story overview keeps the confirmed premise separate from unrevealed plot details.
Multiple endings and replay value
Liang discussed eight endings in the December 2025 interview. He connected the outcomes to how thoroughly players engage with side content and to conditions encountered during the story. The developer did not publish a complete decision tree.
Multiple outcomes create a reason to replay, but they do not tell us how many full runs will be required. The game could allow some outcomes to be revisited from a save, require earlier choices, or use another structure entirely. No reliable public evidence currently establishes the minimum number of playthroughs.
Likewise, New Game Plus should not be included in a playtime calculation unless S-GAME publishes its final rules. Replay value can come from alternative endings, weapon experimentation, higher difficulty settings, and missed exploration without assuming a specific carry-over mode.
Our endings guide records what the developer has said and lists the requirements that remain unknown. It deliberately avoids the invented ending names and conditions already appearing on some pre-release pages.
Is Phantom Blade Zero open world?
Phantom Blade Zero is not a conventional unrestricted open-world game. S-GAME describes it as a semi-open experience made from multiple handcrafted areas with branching routes and interconnected exploration.
That structure affects how the length estimate should be read. A 20–30 hour main path does not need to account for crossing one enormous landscape. The game instead concentrates optional routes, characters, enemies, and secrets within designed spaces. Bells allow travel between discovered locations, while hand-painted Chinese ink maps provide broad guidance without exposing every route.
This does not make the game strictly linear. Players can leave the most direct path, find hidden content, and return to places they visited earlier. See Is Phantom Blade Zero open world? for the full explanation rather than using map size as a substitute for playtime.
How long will a completionist run take?
There is no dependable completionist estimate yet.
Before launch, no independent group can verify the total number of optional quests, hidden encounters, treasures, route variations, and ending requirements in the final game. Even the meaning of “completion” is unsettled: it could involve one playthrough, every ending, every weapon, or goals that S-GAME has not fully documented.
A responsible guide should therefore avoid assigning a precise total. The 20–30 hour main-story estimate is attributable to the director; a completionist number would currently be guesswork. This page will add measured ranges only after players can document the shipped version.
What we still do not know
Several variables prevent a final playtime calculation:
- The average length of a first completed run
- The complete amount of side content
- A measured completionist playtime
- The fastest realistic story route or future speedrun potential
- Whether New Game Plus changes the structure or time required
- How many replays are necessary to see every outcome
- Complete ending conditions and lockout points
- How much difficulty choice changes progression speed
The three announced difficulty settings may affect individual experiences, but S-GAME has not published enough detail to calculate a separate playtime for Wayfarer, Hellwalker, or Sixty-Six Days. Our difficulty guide covers only their confirmed descriptions.
